Ferdinand balanced his hard hitting depictions of New Orleans street crime with neighborhood portraits, some of which seemed to work as emotional outlets for the artist. In these drawings, everyday folks live their lives on city blocks where gunshots ring out too often. Children often stand on edge, as firsthand witnesses to violence, as young people entering a dangerous world.
